In The Beguiled Sofia Coppola writes and directs the cinematic adaptation of Thomas P. Cullinan's 1996 novel, A Painted Devil. Nicole Kidman plays 'Miss Martha Farnsworth' who runs a girls school in Virginia with a handful of students, including Elle Fanning's 'Alicia', and one remaining teacher (Kirsten Dunst's 'Edwina Morrow') during the U.S. Civil War, when an injured solider (played by Colin Farrell) arrives filling the house with jealously and sexual tension.

This summer Sofia Coppola writes and directs a new cinematic adaptation of Thomas P. Cullinan's 1966 book, A Painted Devil, and this version of The Beguiled is from the women's perspective compared to the 1971 film which starred Clint Eastwood. The 2017 movie stars Nicole Kidman, Kirsten Dunst and Elle Fanning sheltered from the outside world at a girls' school in Virginia during the U.S. Civil War when Colin Farrell's wounded mercenary soldier is taken in, filling the house with sexual tensions and rivalry.
