I love this time of year in L.A., it's when all the Oscar hopefuls start coming out of the woodwork and studios try and support their films however they can, like for example with movie costume exhibits at flagship Hollywood cinemas. Here's a wonderful collection of film fashion from Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara's new film, Carol, on display at ArcLight Hollywood on November 17, 2015.

These wardrobe pieces worn by the two actresses in the film set in the 1950s New York were also accompanied by concept sketches by Oscar-winning Costume Designer Sandy Powell, which was a lovely touch.

In director Todd Haynes adaptation of Patricia Highsmith's acclaimed 1952 novel, The Price of Salt, two women from very different backgrounds are drawn to one another in an expected love affair in 1950s New York.

In the movie Cate Blanchett plays 'Carol Aird', a housewife and mother trapped in a loveless, convenient marriage, who meets and falls in love with Rooney Mara's 'Therese Belivet', a twenty-something Manhattan department store clerk dreaming of a better life. As they say, the course of true love never did run smooth and 1950s America was a much more complicated and dangerous place for lesbians lovers.

I love this time of year when all the movie costume exhibits start popping up with greater frequency as all the filmmakers vie for Hollywood cinema goers attention (often working in the industry themselves), in the key run up to awards season. The latest display to catch my eye is this duo of costumes worn by Mark Strong and Keira Knightley in the World War II code-breaking drama, The Imitation Game.

Sammy Sheldon Differ is responsible for the wartime British wardrobe featured in the film and these original costumes were photographed on display at ArcLight Hollywood cinema on November 18, 2014.

The Imitation Game is a historical thriller based on true events and the 1992 biography, Alan Turing: The Enigma, by Andrew Hodges and tells the tale of genius gay British mathematician, logician, cryptologist and computer scientist who led the charge in cracking Nazi Germany's Enigma Code that helped the Allied Forces win WWII.

Alan Turing went on to assist in the development of computers at the University of Manchester after the war, but was prosecuted by the U.K. government in 1952 for homosexual acts, which were illegal at the time. Forced to accept treatment in the form of oestrogen injections (a form of chemical castration), as an alternative to prison, the genius who is widely considered the father of theoretical computer science and artificial intelligence died in 1954 from what is believed to be suicide.

Mark Strong plays 'Major General Stewart Menzies' in the movie and wears this smart double-breasted pinstripe suit in the movie. Chief of MI6 (the Secret Intelligence Service), he was responsible for wartime intelligence and counterintelligence and supervised the code-breaking initiative at Bletchley Park.

There's been a severe drought of costume and prop exhibits over these east Summer months, so it was nice to spy these original film costumes from Kristen Wiig and Bill Hader's new movie, The Skeleton Twins, on display within the foyer of ArcLight Hollywood cinema on September 11, 2014.

Mikaela Wohl was Costume Designer on this relationship drama about a set of estranged twins, played by the reunited SNL stars, who after ten years apart both cheat death on the same day, causing them to seek each other out and repair their damaged relationship.
