The Fantastic Four: First Steps Flashback Tech Suits and screen-used props on display...

The Fantastic Four: First Steps introduces Marvel's first family to the Marvel Cinematic Universe on the retro-futuristic world of Earth-828 where they are the only super-powered heroes. Vanessa Kirby stars as 'Sue Storm' aka the 'Invisible Woman', Pedro Pascal is 'Reed Richards' aka 'Mister Fantastic', Joseph Quinn is 'Johnny Storm' aka the 'Human Torch' and Ebon Moss-Bachrach is 'Ben Grimm' aka 'The Thing'. Taking place four years after the plucky scientists and astronauts gained their super-powers on a space flight via cosmic rays, the Fantastic Four face a threat from the stars as a female 'Silver Surfer', 'Shalla-Bal' (Julia Garner), heralds the imminent arrival of the planet-devourer, 'Galactus'

Alexandra Byrne is Costume Designer on director Matt Shakman's Fantastic Four MCU debut and these costumes were photographed temporarily on display at Hollywood's iconic El Capitan Theatre on August 1, 2025.

In the movie the team wear these 'Tech Suit' costumes briefly in flashback scenes where the FF face the 'Mole Man' and his giant monster, 'Giganto'. Unfortunately the team's current blue and white costumes were on display at this year's San Diego Comic-Con convention, but I'm glad I still got to see these retro blue and black suits.

Kasra Farahani is the Production Designer responsible for the retro-futuristic aesthetic of the film, inspired by Fantastic Four co-creator Jack Kirby's artistic work and Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey.

These set pieces and props, including a cockpit chair from the FF's Excelsior rocket ship and fun bubble car vehicle from the film, give you a glimpse of the movie's visual style.

If you like these retro costumes and props, you may also enjoy these 2001: A Space Odyssey movie costumes and props on display.

Personally I love the film, it may seem slower in pace than other comic book fare like Superman also at the box office this summer, but the world-building, costuming, production design, casting, characterization and storyline are top notch.

A Complete Unknown: Bob Dylan biopic movie costume exhibition at ASU FIDM Museum in DTLA...

Happy New Year, it's been a while and maybe it's not turning out to be that great a start to 2025 after all. Before the wildfires and high winds devastated parts of Hollywoodland on Tuesday, I traveled to Downtown Los Angeles to visit a new immersive costume exhibition dedicated to the new Searchlight Pictures biopic, A Complete Unknown, starring Timothée Chalamet as folk and rock music icon, Bob Dylan.

The wonderful exhibition for director James Mangold's new film features costume designs by Arianna Phillips and outfits worn by Timothée Chalamet as Bob Dylan, Elle Fanning as Sylvie Russo, Monica Barbaro as Joan Baez, Edward Norton as Pete Seeger and Boyd Holbrook as Johnny Cash.

The film takes place in the early 1960s and chronicles the young musician from Minnesota arriving in New York City's Greenwich Village, rising to fame as a folk singer and culminating in his controversial performance at the 1965 Newport Folk Festival.

The free exhibition opened January 7 and was scheduled to run until January 18, 2025 (Tuesday through Saturday), but the ongoing fires and weather conditions have caused closures, so be sure to check ASU FIDM Museum's socials for the most up to date opening hours.

The extensive exhibition comes complete with music and footage from the movie, my only criticism being there is no signage to identify which costumes belong to who, so stay tuned for more detailed photos when I've been able to sleuth the internet for greater clarity.

Costume exhibitions at this time of year are often part of studios awards season campaigning, so be sure to check out these previous timely exhibits featuring House of Gucci movie costumes, Women Talking movie costumes, Till movie costumes and Oscar-winning Poor Things movie costumes.
