Festive movie costumes and props to get you in the Christmas spirit...

If like me you love this time of the year, then you'll enjoy this assortment of festive costumes and props from the movies to help you get in the holiday spirit.

Babes in Toyland movie costumes
Babes in Toyland film costumes
First up are these classic costumes which evoke the winter season from Disney's 1961 festive musical, Babes in Toyland.

This joyful duo of costumes designed by Bill Thomas were worn by Tom Piper and Annette Funicello and photographed on display at the Treasures of the Walt Disney Archives temporary exhibit at The Reagan Library in California's Simi Valley in July 2012.

The Santa Clause 3 costume
Tim Allen Santa Clause 3 costume
Next up is a much more familiar 'Santa' outfit worn by Tim Allen in 2006's Disney Christmas comedy sequel, The Santa Clause 3: The Escape Clause.

Ingrid Ferrin was Costume Designer on the film and the big red suit was photographed on display along with Martin Short's Jack Frost costume at Disney's D23 Expo at the Anaheim Convention Center in California in August 2019.
The Grinch costume
Jim Carrey Grinch Santa suit
You can't think about the holiday season for long without thinking about Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas.

In the 2000 big screen adaptation Jim Carrey played the furry green creature menacing Whoville and Rita Ryack was Costume Designer on the live-action film.

The Grinch Max animatronic dog
Grinch Max animatronic dog
The Grinch's Santa suit and this animatronic dog named 'Max' with his faux reindeer antler, were photographed on display at Universal Studios Hollywood theme park from April 2011 to July 2012.

Jim Boulden was responsible for animatronics and Puppet Creator on this family fantasy comedy and you can see more masks, models, sets and props from The Grinch on this blog.

The Chronicles of Narnia White Witch costume
Tilda Swinton Lion Witch Wardrobe Jadis costume
Another film I also think about at Christmas is The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe and 'The White Witch Jadis' who froze the magical land of Narnia in a Hundred Year Winter.

In the first installment of The Chronicles of Narnia from 2005, Tilda Swinton played the frosty sorceress and wore fierce costumes designed by Isis Mussenden, like this fur-coated costume on display at Disney's D23 Fan Expo 2019.

The Nutcracker and the Four Realms Shiver costume
Richard E Grant Nutcracker Four Realms Shiver costume
Keeping to the frosty theme and this next spellbinding costume belongs to 'Shiver' from 2018's The Nutcracker and the Four Realms.

Richard E. Grant played the icy Regent of the Snow Realm in the Disney fantasy film and his wintery attire was designed by Jenny Beavan and captured on display at ArcLight Sherman Oaks cinema in October 2018.

The Huntsman: Winter's War Freya costume
Emily Blunt Huntsman Winters War Freya costume
In 2016's The Huntsman: Winter's War, Emily Blunt played the the icy sorceress 'Freya', the younger sister of the evil 'Queen Ravenna'.

For this prequel to 2012's Snow White and the Huntsman, Colleen Atwood was the Oscar-nominated Costume Designer responsible for the magical medieval fantasy looks and it was photographed on display at Downtown L.A.'s FIDM Museum & Galleries in February 2017.

Anna and the Apocalypse movie costumes
Anna and Apocalypse movie costumes
And these costumes from the 2018 zombie musical, Anna and the Apocalypse, may not seem like the usual festive fare, but bloody snowmen and spiked candy canes aside, the undead carnage does take place around Christmastime.

This exhibit for the comedy-horror film with costumes designed by Fi Morrison was photographed at ArcLight Hollywood cinema in November 2018.

Love Actually movie costumes
Love Actually film costumes
One film I look forward to rewatching every Christmas is Richard Curtis' 2003 romantic comedy Love Actually, it just makes me laugh and cry and smile.

In the movie Bill Nighy plays an aging rock star named 'Billy Mack' hoping for one last hit with a Christmas-themed song and his music video is an homage to Robert Palmer's Addicted to Love and features women playing instruments clad in Santa's helper outfits, Billy's Video Vixens.

Joanna Johnston was Costume Designer on this heartwarming, hilarious and emotional movie and these costumes were photographed at the NBC Universal Experience that used to reside in the Lower Lot of Universal Studios Hollywood back in January 2015.

Noelle movie costumes
Anna Kendrick Noelle film costumes
And the final collection of festive costumes are from a more recent movie, this time the Disney+ original, Noelle starring Anna Kendrick as Santa's daughter.

'Noelle Kringle' looks right at home in these looks at the North Pole, but when she goes searching for her missing brother, the inheritor to Santa's gift-giving legacy, she looks a bit more out of place in Phoenix, Arizona.

Four movie costumes from Noelle designed by Gary Jones were photographed at Disney's D23 Expo 2019 to help launch Disney's new streaming platform.

So did they help? Did these wintery and Yuletide costumes and props help lift your festive spirits? Maybe revisiting some of these holiday movies can help distract you from the real world as we all stay safer at home, snug and warm this festive season.

Cool treasures going under the hammer at Prop Store's Rick Baker live auction...

This Friday May 29, 2015, our friends at Prop Store will be hosting a live auction featuring the works of the legendary makeup effects artist Rick Baker. Nominated for an outstanding twelve Oscars, he's taken home seven Academy Awards for work on films ranging from 2010's The Wolfman, 2000's How The Grinch Stole Christmas, 1997's Men in Black, 1996's The Nutty Professor, 1994's Ed Wood, 1987's Harry and the Hendersons and 1981's iconic An American Werewolf in London.

Now preparing to retire from the film biz, he's auctioning off amazing items from his career-spanning creature collection. Here's a selection of the amazing prop masks, puppets and costumes that caught my eye that are up for grabs.

Included in the auction which takes place at 11am Pacific Standard Time on Friday is this 'Mikey' costume from Barry Sonnenfeld's Men in Black. This original on-the-run reptilian alien, who was voiced by John Alexander, is expected to sell for $20,000-$30,000.

Hammerhead alien from Men in Black II

Another alien piece I love is this 'Hammerhead' alien from the 2002 sequel which is expected to fetch $6,000-$8,000.

Personally I love that these full-size creature props exist, as I think modern cinema relies too heavily on CGI effects.

Frozen Frosty thug statue from Batman & Robin

Another prop which made me chuckle was this frozen 'Frosty' statue from 1997's Batman & Robin. In the movie sequel from Joel Schumacher, this full-size henchman character, played by Joe Sabatino, was frozen in place by Arnold Schwarzenegger's 'Mr. Freeze' villain.

If you like this prop, which could be yours for $2,000-$3,000, be sure to check out more original film costumes and props from Batman & Robin on display here at Hollywood Movie Costumes and Props.

Mechanical Bat Gremlin and Daffy Gremlin puppets from Gremlins 2

Gremlins 2 Daffy Gremlin puppet
Next up are two fantastic puppets from a comedy horror franchise I love and the 1990 sequel, Gremlins: The New Batch.

This follow-up entry by Joe Dante was much more of a parody than the original and I personally loved when the 'Bat Gremlin' bursts through the window to make the Batman sign (because everyone was still in awe of Tim Burton's 1989 movie and Batman logos were everywhere from t-shirts to fridge magnets).

Being auctioned as different lots, this mechanical bat Gremlin is expected to go for $6,000-$8,000, whilst the 'Daffy' marionette Gremlin puppet will set you back $4,000-$6,000.

Harry and the Hendersons head, hands, feet and muscle suit
Harry and the Hendersons mask costume
In 1987's family comedy Harry and the Hendersons, the infamous 'Bigfoot' befriends a family after they knock him down with their car returning from a vacation. This hairy creature costume won Rick Baker an Academy Award and now you can own a piece of history for as little as $6,000-$8,000.

The Grinch Santa costume worn by Jim Carrey
Original Jim Carrey The Grinch Santa costume
People are forever asking if the costumes and props I feature on this blog are for sale, and sadly I say that I only feature exhibits that I come across on my travels.

One of the most frequent requests, especially around the Holidays, is for The Grinch's Santa suit worn by Jim Carrey, so now yes, you can actually own an original costume from Ron Howard's 2000 Oscar-winning live-action movie. This ensemble is expected to sell for anything from $6,000-$8,000, so maybe it's time to write that letter to Father Christmas now.

In addition to these top picks, the auction will also have an eclectic mix of authentic items from films like 1984's Greystoke: The Legend of Tarzan, Lord of the Apes, 1988's Gorillas in the Mist, Michael Jackson's iconic Thriller music video and Moonwalker fantasy movie, 1995's Batman Forever, 2003's The Haunted Mansion, Tim Burton's 2001 Planet of the Apes, 2004's Hellboy and more besides.

Be sure to check out the PropStore website for full details of this exciting event and how to own a true collectible from one of your favourite films.

Record player prop from The Grinch on display...

Every year around the Holidays, Hollywood Movie Costumes and Props gets a big surge in traffic and queries from people searching for movie memorabilia from the 2000 live-action film starring Jim Carrey, Dr. Seuss' How The Grinch stole Christmas. Here's a new addition to the items I've already discovered at Universal Studios Hollywood, this one photographed on February 7, 2013 at the constantly changing NBC Universal Experience exhibit.

The Grinch's Santa suit and camera prop on display...

In Ron Howard's 2000 big screen live-action adaptation of Dr Seuss' How The Grinch Stole Christmas, funny man Jim Carrey played the titular green-furred 'Grinch'.

I know it's strange to see such a festive costume on display outside of the Holidays, but The Grinch's Santa suit designed by Rita Ryack, alongside The Book of Who prop, was photographed at Universal Studios Hollywood on April 26, 2012.

The Grinch diamond ring prop and Whoville model on display...

Universal Studios Hollywood always have a fantastic array of authentic costumes and props on display at their NBC/Universal Experience museum attraction, celebrating the studios popular movies and television shows. Take for example this dazzling ring prop from Ron Howard's 2000 big budget version of Dr Seuss' How the Grinch stole Christmas.

Included in the display from the film starring Jim Carrey as the titular 'Grinch' was this production model of one of the Whoville homes built for the movie. And if you like this one, be sure to check out this other Whoville model from a previous exhibit.

The other fun thing I spotted this visit was The Grinch's animatronic dog Max used in the making of the movie.

Max animatronic dog from The Grinch on display...

In 2000's live-action version of How The Grinch Stole Christmas, Jim Carrey's 'Grinch' has a loyal dog called 'Max' who helps him with his pesky schemes.

Although The Grinch's faithful hound was voiced by Frank Welker, he was apparently played by six different mixed-breed rescue shelter dogs as well as an animatronic version.

Jim Boulden was Animatronics and Puppet Creator for The Grinch, so I believe he is responsible for bringing this Max puppet to life on screen.

This special creature effect was photographed on display at Universal Studios Hollywood on March 28, 2011.

If you're a fan of the movie be sure to check out this Whoville model and facial make-up prosthetics worn by Jim Carrey as The Grinch.

Jim Carrey's make-up prosthetics from The Grinch...

During the production of Ron Howard's big budget live-action remake of How The Grinch Stole Christmas, over forty-five make-up artists used around 8,000 make-up appliance.

Original Grinch facial prosthetics on display

The prosthetic make-up Jim Carrey wore to become the titular 'Grinch' in the 2000 movie took three hours to apply. Apparently Carrey felt so horribly confined and uncomfortable in the latex skin he needed counseling from a Navy SEAL who taught him torture-resistance techniques.

These prosthetics from the movie were on display at Universal Studios Horror Make-Up Show in Orlando on September 23, 2010.

Rick Baker's make-up and Gail Rowell-Ryan's hair creations won the 2001 Academy Award for Best Make-Up for How The Grinch Stole Christmas.
