The Woman King tells the story of the Agojie, the all-female warrior unit that protected the West African Kingdom of Dahomey during the 17th to 19th centuries. Viola Davis stars as 'General Nanisca', the leader of the warrior women who trains the next generation of of fighters to oppose their enemies and defend their kingdom. Set in 1823, among these neophyte warriors is the strong-willed 'Nawi' (played by Thuso Mbedu), who befriends the veteran Agojie, 'Izogie' (Lashana Lynch) and we also learn has a familial connection to their military leader.
