Original props from 2001: A Space Odyssey on display...

This is the final installment of movie memorabilia on display at the Stanley Kubrick exhibit at LACMA that I photographed on January 10, 2013 and these props are from the filmmaker's 1968 vision of the future, 2001: A Space Odyssey.

Djinn chair and sofa props from 2001: A Space Odyssey
These original props featured in the sci-fi epic helped create the futuristic look of the film, including these modernist Djinn chair and sofa designs by Olivier Mourge which featured in the travel lounges found aboard the orbiting Space Station V.

When making the film, Stanley Kubrick approached a variety of companies to design futuristic looking products for the movie, including the U.S. watchmaking company Hamilton.

Also featured in the movie were these examples of minimalist cutlery by Arne Jacobsen, which had the perfect sleek and futuristic look for the science fiction film.

Moonwatcher mask and costume from 2001: A Space Odyssey on display...

There's nothing like a monkey suit to make you smile, especially when it's one from the Dawn of Man, like this one from 2001: A Space Odyssey.

It really was a treat to see this original 'Moonwatcher' mask and full body costume from the 1968 sci-fi classic on display at LACMA's Stanley Kubrick exhibit in L.A. on January 10, 2013.

This costume and mask feature in The Dawn of Man section at the start of movie, which depicts scenes from early human evolution where Moonwatcher, the dominant male man-ape of the tribe, first encounters the mysterious black Monolith which encourages his use of bones as both tools and weapons.

Makeup legend Stuart Freeborn, who recently passed away, was responsible for the creature effects makeup on this epic sci-fi movie. Apparently it took around two years to craft the masks with moving lips and tongues, along with realistic looking simian teeth and the apelike hominid body suits which were made from human, yak and horsehair.

Seeing them up close, especially considering when they were made, it's easy to see why his work so impressed George Lucas that the director asked him to handle the makeup for Star Wars, where he created the likes of 'Yoda' and 'Chewbacca'.

Military costumes from Barry Lyndon on display...

The Oscar-winning outfits from Stanley Kubrick's 1975 period drama, Barry Lyndon, proved extremely popular the other day, so here's another selection of costumes from the movie on display at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) on January 10, 2013.

This assortment of 18th Century regimental soldier uniforms and an original costume worn by Ryan O'Neal as the titular 'Barry Lyndon' were designed by Milena Canonero and Ulla-Britt Soderland, who shared an Academy Award for Best Costume Design for the film.

The film is inspired by the 1844 novel the 'Luck of Barry Lyndon' by William Makepeace Thackeray which follows the exploits of a fictional 18th century Irish adventurer.

During his life 'Redmond Barry' joins the British army and fights against the French in the Seven Years' War. Deserting the army, he later seduces and marries the Countess of Lyndon, taking her name and becoming 'Redmond Barry Lyndon'.

Costumes and props from A Clockwork Orange on display...

Stanley Kubrick's controversial Oscar-nominated 1971 dystopian future sci-fi classic was largely banned and made unavailable in Britain for around twenty-seven years due to its depiction of extreme sexual violence. Having grown up in the U.K. during this time, I found it even more interesting to see this collection of movie memorabilia for A Clockwork Orange so openly displayed at LACMA's Stanley Kubrick exhibit.

The exhibit at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art was comprised mainly of reproduction costumes and props, but it did feature the original sword cane used by Malcolm McDowell as the sociopathic delinquent 'Alex DeLarge' in the movie set in a futuristic Britain.

Milena Canonero was the original Costume Designer responsible for creating the now iconic look for Alex and his ultra-violent thug gang of 'Droogs'.

At other ends of the spectrum, you can also see her Oscar-winning period costume designs in Barry Lyndon and outfits used in The Shining horror movie.

Also on display were mannequin reproductions of the Korova Milk Bar maids, which have a real 70's vibe to them, used as set dressing and ornamental tables in the futuristic bar where the youth gangs indulge in the intoxicating 'milk plus' (from the mannequin's breasts no less).

It's amazing how the world has moved on and imagery like this is no longer as shocking as it was forty years ago, although the societal, political and economic themes of the movie, like gang violence, are still relevant today.
