T'Challa, Nakia and Okoye costumes from Black Panther on display...

Already grossing over $921 million at the box office worldwide, Marvel Studios solo Black Panther movie starring Chadwick Boseman as the titular hero is on track to become the next $1 billion blockbuster smash. Surely Ryan Coogler's radical superhero movie will be a top pick for next year's Oscars, especially for Ruth Carter's Costume Design for which she not only helped create superhero suits, but distinct looks for all the Wakandan tribes, warriors and citizens.

The Walking Dead's Dania Gurira plays the fearless general of Wakanda's elite spear-wielding all-female fighting force and royal guard, the Dora Milaje.

For the armoured designs for the Dora Milaje Visual Concept Designer Anthony Francisco drew inspiration from his Phillipino upbringing and the Igorot ethic group in the designs, with the stacked neck rings inspired by the Ndebele tribe of South Africa and the deep red referencing the Maasi warriors from Southern Kenya and Northern Tanzania.

Ruth Carter brought the looks to life with gold and silver armour created by jewelry designers, with gold signifying seniority, whilst hand-tooled leather harnesses and beaded tabards were made by craftsmen in South Africa.

Green is her signature colour and this is the ceremonial costume she wears at Warrior Falls for T'Challa's coronation and the shell, bead and leaf inspired look is based in part on the Suri of Ethiopia.
