In December 2020 Shonda Rhimes revamped the period drama genre with the release of Bridgerton on Netflix, widely praised for its diversity, inclusion and steamy sex scenes. The historical romance series set in the competitive world of Regency Era London is based on Julia Quinn's Bridgerton book series. The sophomore season of the show told an enemies-to-lovers tale which followed Jonathan Bailey's 'Viscount Anthony Bridgerton' as he looks for a suitable viscountess, who he finds in 'Kathani "Kate" Sharma' (Simone Ashley). In the television series Golda Rosheuvel plays 'Queen Charlotte', Adjoa Andoh plays the sharp-tongued London socialite 'Lady Agatha Danbury' and Nicola Coughlan is 'Penelope Featherington', another young lady recently launched into society.
