To celebrate Costume Designer Ruth E. Carter's birthday today, enjoy these superfly costumes from Netflix's biographical comedy Dolemite Is My Name. Set in 1970s L.A., the film Eddie Murphy stars as 'Rudy Ray Moore' who created the stand-up comedy stage pimp persona 'Dolemite' and starred in several Blaxploitation movies based on the character, starting with 1975's Dolemite. In the movie Da'Vine Joy Randolph plays single mother-turned-Moore confidante and collaborator, 'Lady Reed' (and later film star 'Queen Bee'), whilst Wesley Snipes plays Rosemary's Baby actor 'D'Urville Martin'.

This film's wardrobe with their funky 1970s vibe were photographed on display at Downtown L.A.'s FIDM Museum & Galleries on February 4, 2020 (although unfortunately once again a black cast's outfits are presented on white mannequins).Ruth E. Carter was Costume Designer on this film directed by Craig Brewer, and you can see more of her work with these Oscar-winning Black Panther movie costumes, these Selma movie costumes and these Roots TV remake costumes on display.
