Angelina Jolie and Elle Fanning Maleficent movie costumes on display...

This Disney villain has been terrifying children since 1959's animated classic Sleeping Beauty, but now Angelina Jolie has been perfectly cast in the live-action origin story of the malevolent fairy, Maleficent.

To help promote the movie in advance of its cinema release the ArcLight Sherman Oaks theatre had these magical costumes, worn by Angelina Jolie as the titular 'Maleficent' and Elle Fanning as the soon to be sleeping 'Princess Aurora', on display in its lobby on May 27, 2014.

These original costume creations were designed by Anna B. Sheppard, whose work can also be seen in Captain America: The First Avenger, The Pianist, Dragonheart and Schindler's List amongst many others.

Angelina Jolie Maleficent movie forest costume
As she lives in the forest you can see that Maleficent's clothing is influenced by nature, like animal skins, feathers and bones, even the colour choices of this garment are very earthy. Her spiky, edgy-looking ring and bracelet jewelry looks like it is made from wood or bone materials. She wears this costume when we are introduced to the grown-up Maleficent flying high over The Moors.

Be sure to also take a look at Maleficent's Christening curse costume and if you're a fan of the actress, be sure to also check out Angelina Jolie's 1920's period costume from Changeling.

In addition to this woodland Maleficent outfit, they also had this hooded costume (minus the belt) worn by Elle Fanning as the infamous Sleeping Beauty herself, Princess Aurora, who the vindictive fairy curses as a baby.

I'm sure all you costumers out there will appreciate the embroidery detail on the sleeves, neckline and hem of the dress.

If you're Disney fan, be sure to check out more Disney movie costumes and props on display from past exhibits like Muppets Most Wanted, Mary Poppins, Oz The Great and Powerful, Alice in Wonderland, Pirates of the Caribbean and more besides.

If you like these Maleficent costumes, be sure to stick around in the days to come as I believe the El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood will have more authentic costumes from the movie on display when the film is released on May 30, 2014.

  2. Thank you so much for providing these photos! I'm working on a cosplay of this version of Maleficent and since it features so little in the movie, it's super difficult to find good close ups of the costume.
