Angelina Jolie's Maleficent Christening curse movie costume on display...

In Disney's live-action version of Maleficent we apparently discover the true events behind the fairytale of Sleeping Beauty and the magical origin story of the iconic (and misunderstood) villain, once upon a dream. Here's one of the sinister costumes worn by Angelina Jolie as the malevolent fairy in the Christening scene for 'Princess Aurora' ripped straight from the 1959 Disney animated movie classic.

This costume which most closely mirrors the animated Disney villain's iconic look, with her signature horns, spiky collar and flowing robes, was reinterpreted for the live-action big screen by Costume Designer Anna B. Sheppard

This 'Christening curse' outfit and Maleficent's magical staff were photographed on display at the legendary El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood on June 3, 2014.

Black costumes are notoriously hard to photograph in person I find, but I love this update of the Sleeping Beauty villain's costume, with is made from a Japanese material with tiny pleats (leftover from a previous movie the Costume Designer had worked on) and the long train shown in the movie was finished in leather, as there wasn't enough of the pleated fabric.

Angelina Jolie worked with Special Effects Makeup maestro Rick Baker to help create Maleficent's angular prosthetic cheekbones. Plus working alongside Anna B. Sheppard, Justin Smith designed the horn wraps of Angelina Jolie's headpieces, whilst a team from Spain led by Manuel Albarran worked to create the fairy's wild collars.

Meanwhile the staff prop was made with rope and wood, with a sculpted tip to complete the dark, foreboding look.

If you like this iconic costume revamp, you may also like the Wicked Witch of the West's movie costume from Oz The Great and Powerful and more looks from the Disney movie.

  1. I absolutely loved the costumes in this movie. This was one of my favorites, the details are exquisite. Did you happen to see her final battle costume on display as well?

The leather bodysuit was my favorite because of how it really let her move but was still a work of art.

  2. I've not seen the battle costume yet, but if I do I'll be sure to post it here.
