The Northman is based on the legend of 'Amleth', a Viking Prince who sets out on a quest to avenge the murder of his father. In AD 895, 'King Aurvandill War-Raven' (Ethan Hawke) returns to the island of Hrafnsey and reunites with his wife, 'Queen Gudrún' (Nicole Kidman) and his heir 'Prince Amleth'. The next day he is brutally murdered by his brother, who also kidnaps the boy's mother. Two decades later after escaping, a grown Amleth (played by Alexander Skarsgård) has become a berserker Viking who meets a fortune teller of the future, a Seeress (Byörk), who reminds him of his vow to rescue his mother, avenge his father and kill his uncle. In the movie Ineta Šliužaitė plays the 'Valkrja' or 'Valkyrie', warrior women who serve the Norse god 'Odin' and decide those who are worthy to be carried though the gate of Valhalla when they are slain on the battlefield.
