In Florence Foster Jenkins Meryl Streep received her twentieth Oscar nomination for playing a New York heiress socialite in the 1940s who dreams of being an opera singer despite having an appalling voice, whilst Hugh Grant plays her encouraging husband and Simon Helberg plays her reluctant pianist. Consolata Boyle also received her second Academy Award nomination for Best Achievement in Costume Design for the period comedy drama.

I think you can see from these fabulous theatrical costume designs, which the aspiring singer performed in on stage and in the recording booth, why they were nominated for an Oscar this year. As the story is based on true events, the costumes were designed to emulate those actually worn by the real Florence Foster Jenkins.

Fans of the accomplished actress can also enjoy her movie costumes from Into the Woods, her Margaret Thatcher costumes from The Iron Lady (also designed by Consolata Boyle), her Julia Child costume from Julie & Julia, her Mamma Mia: The Movie costume, her film costumes from It's Complicated and her Emmeline Pankhurst movie costume from Suffragette. That's quite a career in costume.
Both nominees would be worthy recipients this awards season, so let's see if either of them takes home the golden statuette at the 89th awards ceremony on February 26, 2017.
