In Avatar: The Way of Water we return to the habitable moon of Pandora sixteen years after the Na'vi race repelled the human RDA (Resources Development Administration) invasion. 'Jake Sully' (Sam Worthington) is now chief of the Omatikaya clan, raising a family with his mate 'Neytiri' (Zoe Saldana). When the RDA return to colonize the moon, their family is forced to flee their forest tribe and seek refuge on Pandora's eastern seaboard with the oceanic Metkayina clan. 'Tonowari' (Cliff Curtis) is chief of the reef-living clan, living there with his free-diving pregnant wife 'Ronal' (Kate Winslet) and his daughter 'Tsireya' (Bailey Bass).
Na'vi costumes from Avatar: The Way of Water
Deborah Scott is Costume Designer on the movie sequel and this assortment of costumes from the film were photographed on display at Downtown L.A.'s FIDM Museum on March 7, 2023.
Even though actors are not dressed on sets every day whilst filming, concept art and actual physical costumes are created for the nine-foot-tall blue Na'vi to give the actors in their performance capture suits an understanding of what they will look like and how they may move in the finished movie.
The Metkayina clan costumes incorporated lots of woven and braided materials and shells, with colours influenced by the ocean and sunsets.
You can see more of Deborah Scott's work in Avatar, plus these costumes from The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and these Transformers: Dark of the Moon costumes and these Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen costumes on display.
