Ridley Scott's 1991 road trip movie Thelma & Louise, starring the magnificent Susan Sarandon and Geena Davis, was a genre defining piece of cinematic history and this is the iconic 1966 Ford Thunderbird Convertible that featured in the movie.

One of many identical cars used in the filming of the movie, apparently this turquoise Thunderbird was used primarily for close-up shots and was obviously not the car that went over the Arizona desert cliff at the end of the movie. This picture car was photographed on display at the Petersen Automotive Museum on December 16, 2012.

What cliff and location was used for that fateful decision? I am from Arizona and would love to visit. Did a car actually go off the cliff as incinuated above, or was it fabricated? I am a "Louise" and have a "Thelma". We just drove my dad's old '82 dodge ram pickup from upstate N.Y. to Arizona that he gave to me. It had no working speedometer and no A/C. We adorned the truck w/ " Thelma and Louise ride again" and other fun items like vintage neckerchiefs blowing out our windows. We got the thumbs up often, lots of smiles and honks. An unforgettable journey.....
ReplyDeleteApparently the cliff standing in for the Grand Canyon at the end of the movie is in Dead Horse Point State Park, near Moab, Utah. Thanks for sharing!
