Halloween is coming, so I've looked back over the past twelve months of costume exhibits I've been lucky enough to see in person to share a few looks that may provide some inspiration for the witching season. Whether it's a modern Disney princess, an evil witch, a marvelous superhero, a magical nanny or a medieval fantasy warrior, here are ten looks that should give women some ideas for costumes this Halloween.
Esmé Squalor
First up is one of my favourite costumes of the year from the third and final season of Netflix's A Series of Unfortunate Events. This octopus-inspired costume designed by Cynthia Summers was worn by Lucy Punch as 'Esmé Squalor' in the series and is a wonderful mix of Disney's villainous 'Ursula' from The Little Mermaid and with high fashion.
Princess Jasmine
Next up is 'Princess Jasmine' from Disney's live-action version of Aladdin. The Disney princess was already a fan-favourite from the 1992 animated musical feature, but Naomi Scott's modern take on the heroine will clearly resonate with fans this Halloween.Michael Wilkinson was Costume Designer on this live-action musical and responsible for giving the lovable cartoon characters a human world makeover.
This year Brie Larson's 'Captain Marvel' burst onto cinema screens for the first time in a big way, starring in her own solo standalone movie and helping save the day in Avengers: Endgame.
'Carol Danvers' already has a huge Carol Corps following thanks to her Marvel Comics series, so I'm sure there'll be more than a few Captain Marvel costumes flying around this Halloween.
Sanja Milkovic Hays was responsible for translating this iconic costume to the big screen this year and if blue, red and yellow aren't your colours, you could always check out her Kree Starforce silver, black and green Captain Marvel costume.
Black Widow
Speaking of Avengers, and Scarlett Johansson's 'Natasha Romanoff' really scarified a lot to help defeat 'Thanos' this year.So if you want to pay homage to the super-spy, then maybe her latest 'Black Widow' costume designed by Judianna Makovsky will be your choice this Halloween, especially with her own solo prequel movie on the way.
Mary Poppins
From trained assassins to a magical nanny with an equally hard job (looking after three troublesome children and their family), 'Mary Poppins' returned to the big screen courtesy of Emily Blunt this Christmas past.Costume Designer Sandy Powell was responsible for updating, yet retaining her iconic look, and if this version isn't your cup of tea, then maybe these other Mary Poppins Returns costumes would be.
Sugar Plum Fairy
If you really wanted to feel sugary sweet this Halloween, then maybe you should consider dressing up as the 'Sugar Plum Fairy' from The Nutcracker and the Four Realms.Jenny Beavan was Costume Designer on the magical fantasy and created this elaborate gown worn by Keira Knightley in the film.
Queen Elizabeth I
From one regal gown to another, and if you want to feel like royalty this Halloween, then maybe you can draw inspiration from Margot Robbie's 'Queen Elizabeth I' from Mary Queen of Scots.Alexandra Byrne was the Costume Designer responsible for bringing some 16th century film fashion to the big screen.
Winifred Sanderson
One of this blog's all-time most visited postings has been for Disney's Hocus Pocus movie costumes, so you can imagine I jumped at the chance to take more pictures when I saw Bette Midler's 'Winifred Sanderson' carefully preserved witch wardrobe once again on display at this year's D23 Expo.Mary Vogt was the Costume Designer responsible for the bewitching costumes featured in the 1993 film.
Susie Myerson
If you're looking for something fun to wear this Halloween, then maybe Alex Borstein's Catskills cabaret costume from the sophomore season of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel will float your boat.Donna Makowska was Emmy-winner for Outstanding Period Costumes and responsible for creating this look for 'Susie Myserson' in the comedy set in late 1950s New York City.
Arya Stark
And finally for this collection of ideas, the true hero of Game of Thrones, Maisie Williams 'Arya Stark', who defeated the icy 'Night King' single-handedly.There are so many complex female characters to draw inspiration from in the fantasy drama, so be sure to check out these other Emmy-winning Game of Thrones final season costumes on display, designed by Michele Clapton and her team.
If none of these looks help, then maybe these Halloween costume ideas from last year will also provide more inspiration.
Plus feel free to search a myriad of other costumes from all genres, big and small screen, on this blog.
