This year the second feature film adaptation of West Side Story is nominated for seven Academy Awards, including for Best Costume Design for Paul Tazewell. Steven Spielberg directs this big screen adaptation of the 1957 stage musical about young love between 'Maria' (Rachel Zegler) and 'Tony' (Ansel Elgort) who meet at a high school dance in 1957 New York City. Their romance only helps to fuel the fires between the rival Jets and Sharks gangs vying for control of the streets, which will lead to tragedy for both sides.

In the film Rachel Zegler makes her feature film debut as Maria, the sister of 'Bernardo', the gang leader of the Puerto Rican Sharks.
She meets Tony, a former Jet gang member who is currently on parole and is trying to turn over a new leaf working for 'Valentina', the Puerto Rican owner of Doc's general store.

In this movie Rita Moreno plays the aforementioned store owner Valentina, but in the original 1961 film she actually starred as 'Anita', Bernardo's girlfriend and Maria's closest confidante, for which she won the Supporting Actress Oscar.

This time around Ariana DeBose is nominated for Best Supporting Actress for her spirited portrayal of Anita, and she has already won a BAFTA, Screen Actors Guild Award and Critics' Choice Award.
