In Disney's new live-action fairytale movie directed by Kenneth Branagh, Cinderella, not only are the actors the stars of the show, but this fabulous ball gown worn by Lily James as the titular rags-to-riches princess provides much of the film's spectacle.
Original Cinderella ball gown designed by Sandy Powell
and worn by Lily James in the film
This voluminous dress designed by three time Oscar-winner Sandy Powell, was photographed on display at the infamous El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood on March 17, 2015, and it really is a delight to behold in person and even needs a larger display case than usual costumes. If you like this spectacular gown from the updated fairytale, be sure to check out these other original Cinderella movie costumes on display at ArcLight Sherman Oaks cinema in advance of the film opening in theatres.

When Lily James wears this beautiful blue ball gown as Cinderella to the Palace Ball (magically created by her Fairy Godmother), the waltz dance sequence with 'Prince Kit' is a real highlight of the movie. How the dress moves across the floor is amazing and surely deserves an Oscar nomination itself, regardless of the other fantastic outfits in the film.
Cinderella ball gown in more detail
Cinderella's ball gown is adorned with butterfly details, as our heroine has a special affinity with nature and animals, and has over 111,000 light-refracting Crystal Blue Aurora Borealis and Clear crystals. The show-stopping ball gown is made up of 24 layers of tulle and has a circumference of 11.6 metres. In person the blue of the dress is not as strong as in the finished movie and the colour must have been altered in post-production as it's a much deeper, richer blue, as featured on the film's marketing materials.
Original Swarovski crystal slipper prop from Cinderella
Also on display as part of this fantastic exhibit at the El Capitan Theatre was one of Cinderella's Swarovski crystal slippers, and this one actually looks like a real foot could fit inside it compared to other promotional replicas I've seen before. If you like this breath-taking gown, be sure to stay tuned in the days to come for even more fabulous movie costumes from Cinderella on display.
I saw it in NYC and it was pretty blue. I wonder if the lighting in Hollywood washed it out.
