In 2015 John M. Chu brought the popular 80s cartoon singing sensation Jem to life on the big screen, with the live-action movie called Jem and the Holograms. The original animated series ran for 65 episodes from 1985 to 1988 and followed the adventures of the fabulous pink-haired singer and her bandmates.

These rocking stage costumes from the updated movie adaptation were photographed on display at Downtown L.A.'s FIDM (Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising) Museum on February 12, 2016, alongside a whole variety of wardrobes from diverse film genres from the past twelve months.

FIDM graduate Soyon An was Costume Designer on this 2015 Jem and the Holograms film adaptation (also known for dressing modern day pop stars for the stage), and was responsible for updating the fashion and looks of the 80s cartoon to appeal to a contemporary Millennial audience.

In the movie Aubrey Peeples plays 'Jerrica Benton', a small town girl who is propelled into the world of pop stardom when her online music video goes viral and she and her sisters become the singing sensations, 'Jem and the Holograms'.
Apparently Jem's infamous rock 'n' roll pink jacket almost didn't make it into the movie and the bubblegum pink colour was airbrushed onto the leather jacket, taking about 16 hours to get the right effect.

If you like these pop star outfits, you may also like these costumes and props from 2001's Josie and the Pussycats movie adaptation and these Katy Perry concert costumes.Even though the live-action was a bit of a critical and commercial flop, it was still cool to see these fun costumes on display.
