Pan Am TV show costume bus shelter installation...

Yesterday walking through my local West Hollywood neighbourhood I chanced upon this fantastic promotional installation for the new 60's based period drama Pan Am, featuring the iconic in-flight stewardess uniform and flight bag.

Although strictly not an original costume from the forthcoming television series, I couldn't help feature this fashionable ensemble as I thought it was such an innovative and engaging way to market the new show featuring Christina Ricci, helping Pan Am to stand out during the onslaught of the new Fall TV season.

I also love how the installation gives annotated details about each item of the outfit. How the hat was always in place, topping off the iconic airline uniform, or the gloves were perfectly fitted without room even for a wedding ring.

The streamlined jacket was custom-tailored for height and weight to give a sexy, snug fit and the black leather low-heeled pumps were stylish and comfortable, without compromising the strict height restrictions.

It's also fun to see the display include the blue leather weekender flight bag, sporting the iconic Pan Am logo, and I wouldn't be surprised in other less salubrious neighbourhoods to see this bus shelter installation being broken in to for someone to steal this bag.

Ane Crabtree is Series Costume Designer for the new Pan Am television show. This promotional installation was snapped along Santa Monica Boulevard in West Hollywood on September 17, 2011.

  2. Hey. I love your site, I am trying to get ideas for this year. Do you know if I can find the whole Pan Am outfit anywhere. I think it is incredibly creative for a local party here in SD. Thanks again,Tom

  3. Aside from a good seamstress to make you one, I can only suggest checking out local thrift stores or Out of the Closet and customising something you find.

Judging by the search traffic, I think it's going to be a popular look for Halloween this year!

  4. The costume used here is not identical to those built by Ane Crabtree's team for the television series. These were made for a convention promotion, then recycled for this advertisement. You'll note the hat is not quite right and the lapel pin is a plastic double-wing design, not a metal half-wing pin as used in the TV show. Costume World, America's largest theatrical costumer, is currently preparing their own replica Stewardess uniforms which will be available for rental this Halloween! Contact them by phone soon, as they are likely to book quickly! 800-423-7496

I still think this promotional outfit is great reference for those wanting to make their own Pan Am outfit though :-)
