In 2023 director Greta Gerwig brought Mattel's iconic doll 'Barbie' to the big screen and grossed over $1.4 billion at the global box office. Margot Robbie starred as the titular toy icon and Ryan Gosling played her wannabe boyfriend 'Ken'. The film garnered eight Oscar nominations, including the Academy Award for Best Achievement in Costume Design for Jacqueline Durran.

Two of the screen-worn costumes from Barbie were captured on display at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures on October 13, 2025. The featured costumes included the one worn by Barbie when she leaves Barbieland and drives to the real world, along with Ken's double denim look from the feature film.
If you want to see more of Jacqueline Durran's Oscar-nominated costumes designs from the movie, be sure to also check out these other Barbie movie costumes that were previously on display at the ASU FIDM Museum in Downtown L.A.
Plus you can see more of her design work with these Oscar-winning Anna Karenina movie costumes, these Oscar-nominated 2019 Little Women movie costumes, these Oscar-nominated live-action Beauty and the Beast movie costumes and these 2015 Macbeth movie costumes, to name a few.

Production Designer Sarah Greenwood and Set Decorator Katie Spencer were also nominated for the Oscar for Best Achievement in Production Design for the movie. When I visited the Academy Museum it was also fun to see some of the Barbieland miniature sets and film props showcased in their own exhibit.

The production team created a whimsical artificial colorful world with no water, no electricity, no black and white and no chrome, absolutely true to the Barbie brand.
