In
Melina Matsoukas 2019 feature directorial debut,
Queen & Slim, Jodie Turner-Smith and
Daniel Kaluuya are the titular couple who are stopped on their first date in
Ohio by a police officer for a minor traffic violation. When things escalate
'Slim' takes the officer's gun and shoots him in self-defence. The two are labeled cop killers by the media and go on the run, sheltering with
'Queen's' estranged pimp
'Uncle Earl' (Bokeem Woodbine) in
New Orleans, whilst the video the shooting incident goes viral and the two outlaws become a symbol of inequality, trauma, injustice, fear and pain in the country.
