Just like the musical itself which is a mashup of classic Brothers Grimm fairytales, the costumes themselves are a mashup of different periods, styles and inspirations. If you've seen the Disney film, be sure to also enjoy these Cinderella and Prince Charming costumes from Into the Woods and Meryl Streep's Witch costumes from the movie.
Original costume worn by Johnny Depp as The Wolf
in Into the Woods
Johnny Depp's look as 'The Wolf' is inspired by the swing era and the 1940's and 50's Tex Avery MGM cartoons with the zoot suit-wearing wolf character.
This is a hip, big, bad wolf in a fur-fringed fedora and thin wool embroidered zoot suit with fur lapels and dangling cat chain. Apparently The Wolf's tail is made from a wig-making technique from the 1920's. I also like the nice, almost dangerous, splash of red in the The Wolf's tie.
If you're a fan of the actor, be sure to also take a look at his Mad Hatter movie costumes from Alice in Wonderland, also designed by Colleen Atwood, plus his Captain Jack Sparrow costume from the Pirates of the Caribbean movies designed by Penny Rose.
Original Little Red Riding Hood costume
In contrast to the 1950's animation edge of The Wolf's look, the film costume worn by 'Little Red' (played by Lilla Crawford) is inspired by 1930's fairytale illustrations. In the movie Red Riding Hood's cloak was made by her grandmother and is an essential component for the witch's spell to break the curse on her.
For a different take on this iconic fairytale character's look, be sure to also check out Red Riding Hood's costume from TV's Once Upon a Time.
Stick around in the days to come for even more original costumes and props on display from Disney's Into the Woods.
