Emmy-nominated costumes from The Handmaid's Tale on display...

If there's one television show that stunned and chilled me more than any other this past year it was Hulu's adaptation of The Handmaid's Tale. Margaret Atwood's 1985 novel about a dystopian future where a patriarchal and theological totalitarian government rule a new America, women have no rights, LGTB are hung and fertile women are imprisoned, mutilated, raped and forced to become baby making machines for society. It's a harrowing future, but oddly timely in the world we find ourselves living in with racism, homophobia, transphobia, cruelty and misogyny rampant.

That's why I'm glad the TV show was recognised with thirteen Emmy nominations, including one for Costume Designer Ane Crabtree, Assistant Costume Designer Stacy Caballero, and Costume Supervisors Sheena Wichary and Natalie Bronfman.

These costumes from the show are nominated for Outstanding Period/Fantasy Costumes for a Series and were photographed on display at the 11th Outstanding Art of Television Costume Design at Downtown L.A.'s FIDM Museum on August 23, 2017.

The costumes featured included the now iconic red Handmaid costume worn by Elisabeth Moss as 'Offred' (forced to take the name of her male Commander is if she is his property) and the costume worn by Yvonne Strahovski as 'Serena Joy Waterford' the Commander's infertile conservative wife who helped forge this twisted new society.

I for one can't wait to see what happens next in season two of this show and will keep my fingers crossed for the series Emmy chances.
