When he was diagnosed with HIV, the drug addict heterosexual cowboy and homophobe, Ron Woodroof, was given 30 days to live. Prescribed the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) approved AZT, the only legal drug available at the time in the U.S., Ron was brought to the brink of death.

To survive he smuggled anti-viral medications from all over the world unavailable in America, and with the help of his sympathetic doctor, 'Eve Saks' (Jennifer Garner), and a fellow AIDS patient, 'Rayon' (Jared Leto), he established the Dallas Buyers Club, providing paying members with these alternative life-prolonging treatments.
