Original Fantine and Jean Valjean costumes from Les Misérables
Tom Hooper's epic 2012 adaptation of Les Misérables starts with a spectacular scene of prisoners in 1815 France hauling a ship into dock amidst crashing waves. One of those convicts is 'Jean Valjean', played by Hugh Jackman (who is no stranger to treading the boards of a stage musical), whose crime was stealing a loaf of bread to feed his starving family.

The actor wears this raggedy prison outfit, he is prisoner 24601, when he is released from captivity by prison guard 'Javert' after serving his nineteen year sentence.

These costumes earned Paco Delgado an Academy Award nomination for Best Costume Design, but he missed out to Jacqueline Durran for her Anna Karenina costume designs. When released from his imprisonment, Jean Valjean reinvents himself as a factory owner and town mayor and gets to wear much fancier clothes.
Fantine fight scene costume worn by Anne Hathaway in Les Misérables
When Anne Hathaway's 'Fantine' is discovered to have an illegitimate daughter she is fired from Valjean's factory by the foreman and forced to sell her hair and teeth, and eventually become a prostitute to support her child.
This is the costume she wears when she fights with an abusive customer and is arrested by Javert (now a police inspector). Saved by Valjean, she is hospitalised, and he vows to a dying Fantine to take responsibility for her daughter 'Cosette' upon her death.
