In 2017's dark romantic period fantasy, The Shape of Water, Sally Hawkins plays a mute janitor at a high-security laboratory in Baltimore, Maryland in 1962, who falls in love with a captive humanoid Amphibian Man (played by Doug Jones). The cleaner bonds with the creature after visiting him secretly and decides to help him escape before the military can vivisect him to examine his respiratory system.

This screen-used costume was captured on display at the Academy Museum of Motion Picture on October 13, 2025.
Shane Mahan, Mike Hill and Kazu Hiro were responsible for creature concept and makeup of the Amphibian Man and the look is heavily inspired by the classic monster film Creature from the Black Lagoon. The suit is fabricated by Legacy Effects from silicone, cast urethane resin, fiberglass, paint and acrylic.
Fans of Guillermo del Toro's movie can also enjoy these other screen-worn costumes from The Shape of Water designed by Costume Designer Luis Sequeira.
